Liverpool celebrities pay their respects after death of Queen Elizabeth II

The nation was rocked by the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday.

On September 8, it was reported that Her Majesty had died. Her family rushed to be by her side at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, for her final moments. In a statement, the Palace said: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. "

Today, there is a sea of people outside Buckingham Palace as they gather to remember the UK's longest reigning monarch. Many more, who can't make it to Balmoral or London, are still looking for ways to pay their respects to one of Britain's biggest ever losses.

Millions have taken to social media to pay tribute to The Queen. Among them are famous faces from Liverpool - we take a look at some of the messages so far.

Sir Paul McCartney

In a statement on Twitter the Beatle said: "God bless Queen Elizabeth II. May she rest in peace. Long live The King." Alongside the tweet he also shared a black and white image of Her Majesty. The 80-year-old met the late Monarch on numerous occasions, including at the Walker Art gallery during her Golden Jubilee visit in 2012. In 1997 he was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Paul O'Grady

Comedian Paul O'Grady took to Instagram to share a couple of images of him meeting the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance 2001. Alongside him were Liverpool's Cilla Black and EastEnders legend Barbara Windsor.

He reminisced on the memorable day as he wrote: "Here’s a couple of photos from The Royal Variety Performance 2001( I think that was the date) I’m being presented to Her Majesty by our producer Jeff Thacker.

"Cilla, Barbara Windsor and myself had performed ’You gotta have a Gimmick’ from Gypsy. I remember her asking me where I practiced playing my bugle and if my neighbours objected, I told her I went down the field and whilst the neighbours didn’t seem to mind a couple of sheep died of fright."

He ended the post: "R.I.P Ma’am."

Coleen Rooney

Wife of footballing legend, Wayne Rooney, Coleen posted a tribute on Twitter. She shared a black and white portrait of the Monarch as she wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with all the Royal Family. Rest in peace Our Queen." She ended the post with a red love heart.

Jennifer Ellison

SAS star Jennifer took to Instagram as she posted a greyed out image of the Queen. She thanked the monarch for her service as she said: "RIP Our beautiful Queen. Thank you for your incredible service.

"Reunited with your loving husband. What a legacy."

Gemma Owen

The 19-year-old daughter of Michael Owen, and Love Island contestant, Gemma Owen shared a touching tribute to Her Royal Majesty. They both shared a fondness of horses and to represent that Gemma shared an image of the Queen beaming at a stallion on Instagram.

She captioned it: "RIP Queen Elizabeth II. Truly heartbreaking... what an amazing lady."

Paul Hollywood

Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood described The Queen as an "amazing lady". He said: "Such sad news the death of Queen Elizabeth II, dedicating her life in service , an amazing lady RIP."

Danielle Lloyd

Former Miss England model, Danielle Lloyd, kept it simple but sweet as she paid her respects. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: "RIP Queen Elizabeth."

Pete Price

Radio presenter Pete Price made a number of posts on Instagram mourning the loss of Queen Elizabeth. He wrote: "There will never be another LADY like her. #queenelizabeth."

He later posted a collage of the 96-year-old monarch in her younger days as he explained that he felt "comforted" by watching a documentary showing old home movies of her. Pete wrote: "I’ve stopped watching the news as I’ve had enough. I decided to watch Elizabeth The Unseen Queen ( @bbc ) and get an insight into her life with her private home movies. I found this so comforting and has put a smile on my face on this sad day x"

Jamie Redknapp

Former Liverpool FC player Jamie Redknapp paid tribute to The Queen on his Instagram account. He shared an image of her smiling as he wrote: "God bless you our beautiful Queen. You gave everything to our country. We will miss you deeply". He ended the post with a red love heart emoji.

Chrissy Rock

Benidorm star Chrissy Rock also thanked the Queen for her service as she remembered her. She wrote: "RIP to our beautiful Queen. God bless you for your service to the country and the commonwealth x"
