Liverpool Anfield Road redevelopment takes next step as amazing new footage emerges

Less than a week on from hosting its final game of the season, the Anfield pitch was playing host to heavy plant machinery instead of Premier League footballers.

Liverpool are approaching the final stages of the £80m redevelopment of the Anfield Road End, with the end of the 2022/23 campaign bringing about the next major milestone in the project; the removal of the old roof.

Construction continues throughout the summer and the Reds have requested that their first game of next season be played away from home to allow adequate time for the redevelopment to be totally finished.

Earlier this week several large cranes pitched up inside the stadium in readiness for roof removal, with a four-week window in place following the Aston Villa game last weekend for the work to take place.

Once the old roof has been removed the work will then focus on joining together both the new and existing stadium structures, with the completed build to increase the capacity of Anfield by 7,000 seats to take it beyond 61,000.

Drone footage from Mister Drone was uploaded to YouTube on Saturday and showed how the current construction work was coming together.

The capacity increase will help go some way to satisfying pent up demand for tickets and is expected to help the club deliver matchday revenues in excess of £100m over the next couple of seasons.

The ECHO was at Anfield on at the start of May to get a glimpse into the progress of the new stand.

"We get asked each year and we've put in a request for our first game of the season to be away from home," vice president of Stadium Operations Paul Cuttill told the ECHO. "We haven't had that confirmed yet by the Premier League, I must stress. However, if it is confirmed, we're looking at around August 19 for our first home game of the new season to be played here with the Anfield Road stand open, brand new.

"We're on time and we're on budget. It's been an incredibly challenging time to get to this point and we've got a four-week window after our last home game when we remove the roof and that is going to be the next big milestone. We need to hit that to kick on and make sure we're on track to be ready in time for the start of the 23/24 season."
