Liverpool 8 community speaks out after schoolgirl shooting as MP issues demand

Members of the community in Liverpool 8 are angry over the shooting of a 15 year-old girl on Tuesday March 2 in Upper Warwick Street.

People are frustrated at the rise in gun crime after this incident, which is an ongoing issue in the community, across Liverpool and nationally.

The police have confirmed the 15 year-old remains in hospital and in a stable condition after being shot in a bus stop.

The emergency services responded after reports of shots being fired around 5.10pm on Tuesday.

Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson has expressed her anger over the incident and her sympathy for the injured girl.

Kim Johnson told the ECHO : "I’m contacting the Police and Crime Commissioner and others for further information.

“I’m sorry this has happened, as it is a real tragedy for the family.

“Increases in gun and knife crime are due to underfunding and austerity and a lack of resources from the government. This has impacted young people, the council, early intervention and the police.

“This leaves young people vulnerable, corrupted and leads them into criminality.

“Our thoughts are with the young girl at this time.”

Deborah Osu Branaghan said: “I would like to add my feeling and the anger I feel towards these cowards.

“They’re running wild in our community fighting and killing each other, and now we see a young innocent child fighting for her life, whilst some parents sit back and allow it.

“It's so sad to see how they’re taking lives and in the process ruining their own.

“Take me back to our youth, we would be getting a hiding just for giving cheek.

“The parents and the authorities must come down hard on these youths in a way that shows them how to respect themselves, others and all that life offers, because all I see is lack of all the above and a complete waste of life."

Sonia Bassey MBE, Chair Mandela8 told the ECHO: “We in this community and at Mandela8 are really concerned for the young girl who has been shot and our hearts go out to her and her family and friends and we wish her a speedy recovery.

“Sadly this isn't the first time something like this has happened and it is not something that is particular to Liverpool 8.

“The ongoing violence in communities shows us that this type of crime, just like knife crime and other violent crime will continue if National Government, Local Government, the Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner don't have a clear strategy to get guns and knives off our streets and work with communities to provide resources to our youth services and youth and community centres and other organisations working with young people to educate.

“They cannot continue to decimate the services for young people and expect crime to reduce whilst we do not have the resources or ability to create better opportunities for young people.”

A father of three told the ECHO: “The more the system keeps failing these youngsters from the inner city, regardless of their background or ethnicity, the more this type of behaviour will continue.

“I think parents need to be more responsible as well, as it takes a village to raise a child.”

Police have revealed that a 21-year-old man, from Liverpool 8, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A police cordon remains at the scene as house-to-house, forensic and CCTV enquiries are being carried out in the local area.
