Owning a house is something many people strive to achieve in their lives, for the sense of security and freedom it brings. However, it brings responsibilities - chief among them the need to keep a home well-maintained.
Renters will know that, in most cases, if an issue develops with a tenanted property it is the landlord's duty to fix it. Anything from leaky roofs to malfunctioning boilers and broken windows must be fixed by the landlord, who isn't allowed to pass on the cost of the work if it is their responsibility.
But owner-occupiers must foot the bill for everything. And some problems can prove very expensive indeed.
