Lions snare AFL son-of-a-gun Ashcroft

Brisbane have secured one of the hottest properties heading into this year's AFL draft, confirming Will Ashcroft will join the club as a father-son selection.

A potential No.1 pick, Ashcroft is the son of triple premiership- winning Lion Marcus Ashcroft, who played 318 games for the club during his own storied career.

Securing one of the brightest prospects in the game is already being compared to Collingwood's capture of Nick Daicos at last year's draft, with the 19-year-old having enjoyed a stellar debut campaign for the Magpies.

The Western Bulldogs have also named a father-son selection from last year's draft, Sam Darcy, to make his AFL debut against Fremantle this weekend.

Brisbane will be hoping 18-year-old Ashcroft can make a similar impact at the Gabba.

"He has impressed at every level he has played at this year, and like our members, we cannot wait for him to pull on a Brisbane Lions jumper," Lions football manager Danny Daly said.

"Obviously, his father Marcus is a legend of our club and it's exciting to see him follow in those footsteps while also making a name for himself."

A midfielder who has averaged 28 disposals a game for Sandringham Dragons in the national under-19 league this year, Ashcroft said it was an honour to be following in his father's footsteps at the Lions.

"If I can achieve half of what he did then I would be happy," Ashcroft said.

"I am also looking forward to forging my own name."
