On Sunday night, Lionel Messi added the World Cup to his trophy cabinet after Argentina beat France on penalties to win the final in Qatar..
Many believe that with this final triumph secured, Messi has finally put to bed any debate between himself and Cristiano Ronaldo about who is the greatest player of all time, or at least of the current generation of footballers.
Ronaldo went into the World Cup hoping to also add the trophy to his own personal cabinet, but a quarter-final loss to Morocco quashed any hopes of that happening for the Portugal captain. In what was surely his final World Cup, the 37-year-old former Manchester United forward didn't manage to break his knockout round duck and has now played in five tournaments without doing so.

Messi may have now have added further insult to injury to Ronaldo on top of winning the World Cup.
During his interview with Piers Morgan last month, Ronaldo bragged about his large following on social media, including Instagram. Morgan asked him at one point: “Do you have more money in your account or more followers on Instagram?" to which they both laughed.
Ronaldo has the most followers with over 500m users and many would say he has the biggest influence on the platform, but Messi has just outdone him in one respect.
With his post celebrating Argentina's World Cup win, Messi broke the record for the most-liked post on Instagram with over 56m people liking the image. This surpasses the previous holder... a picture of an egg under the account creatively named '@world_record_egg'.
Speculation continues to rage over the futures of both Messi and Ronaldo. Messi is out of contract at PSG in the summer and has been linked with a move to David Beckham's MLS franchise Inter Miami while Ronaldo is hotly tipped to join Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
