Lily Allen has taken ‘show receipts’ and ‘revenge dress’ to the next level, appearing on stage in a dress made entirely of sales slips and bank transfers made by a cheating ex.
The pop star wore the literal paper trail while performing in Glasgow for her West End Girl tour. If you recall, that brutal break-up album traced the demise of Allen’s marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour.
On the track “4chan Stan”, Allen sings of discovering gifts — like a handbag from luxury store Bergdorf Goodman — her partner purchased that weren’t given to her. That’s where the dress comes in.
In clips from the concert, Allen is seen wrapped in a long swath of fabric that is printed with handwritten lyrics, tequila bar transactions and yes, a receipt from Bergdorf Goodman.
While the dress is a direct nod to “4chan Stan”, we don’t know for sure whether the Bergdorf receipt is legit or if Allen is just getting creative.
I’m inclined to say she’s using poetic license, but West End Girl is so ferociously exposing that I could be convinced the receipt is the real deal.
Either way, it’s far from the first time the album, which dropped in October, has made headlines. Much of the media frenzy focussed on the song “Madeline”, in which Allen grills her partner’s mistress.
A woman claiming to be the real-life Madeline — that is, the supposed mistress of Harbour — came forward soon after the album’s release, just as fans were poring over clues about the famous couple’s marriage in a bunch of resurfaced videos.
Allen took steps to distance West End Girl from her real-life — describing the album as “autofiction” and saying Madeline was a composite “fictional character” — but by that point, fans had already read through the lines.
Fans Down Under may get the chance to see Allen’s receipt dress later this year, when she embarks on the Australian leg of her West End Girl tour with shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth throughout October.
In the meantime, I’m going to whack on a magnifying glass and inspect that costume. I haven’t been this invested in a dress since Princess Diana wore the embodiment of a middle-finger back in 1994.
