Applications for Kentucky’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) are still available as one of the hottest summers on record comes to a close.
The enrollment period began July 25 and runs through September 22. They’re available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Katlyn Miller is a representative from Community Action Kentucky, which administers the program.
“The benefits that the household receives depends on their housing category,” Miller said. “So subsidized versus unsubsidized housing, and then what their income level is up to and including the 150 percent of the federal poverty guideline.”
Households making up to that amount can get a one-time benefit sent directly to their electric vendor, which can total from $50 to $250.
The program renews each season, and households are welcome to reapply come fall and winter.
“When the LIHEAP fall subsidy program begins, a household could reapply for that program,” Miller said. “The subsidies are a one time benefit, so they could come back for that fall subsidy, and receiving the summer subsidy is not an impact.”
NASA reported last month that July of 2023 was the hottest month on record.
Federal poverty guidelines are available on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ website. Eligibility requirements are also available through Community Action Kentucky. The agency says to contact one of their 23 local offices to apply.
