Lidl takes trolling to another level with cheeky four-word sign aimed at newest Irish Aldi store

Lidl is being praised for a “marketing win” after erecting a cheeky sign facing an Aldi store next door.

Discount retailer Lidl opened a new supermarket in Knocknacarra, Co Galway last month and it’s right beside rival Aldi.

Ahead of the official opening, an enormous sign popped up facing the Aldi shop.

The poster features the familiar yellow and blue colours along with the Lidl logo and a person peering through binoculars. It has just four words - ‘Keep Your Friends Close’.

TikTok user ‘paul.anthony.1’ uploaded a video showing the scenario, which has since gone viral with over 500,000 views.

He tells viewers: “Just in the Aldi carpark here in Knocknacarra in Galway, and their good old pal Lidl has decided to build a f**king supermarket right in the middle of the carpark and they’ve just put this up.

“On my god, that is absolutely brilliant. Well done Lidl, fair play.”

Hundreds of people have since commented on the video, with one TikTok user writing: “Me, am I the drama??”

“Love Lidl's marketing,” another wrote while a third agreed, “Their ad campaigns are so funny.”

One user suggested: “Aldi need to put up one 'and your enemies closer'.”

The new state-of-the-art Lidl Knocknacarra store officially opened on March 24, creating 30 permanent jobs.

The 1,546sqm shop floor has high ceilings, wide aisles and incorporates a large bakery area with freshly baked breads and pastries.

The environmentally friendly shop has roof mounted solar panels and is powered by 100% green renewable electricity.

Commenting at the opening, store manager Pauline McLoughlin said: “We are delighted to finally open the doors to our brand-new store in Knocknacarra. The store will offer customers an even better shopping experience with its spacious design, ample parking and sustainability features throughout.

“The new store is a positive addition to the local area of Knocknacarra making our fantastic range of top-quality produce available at the best possible prices. We look forward to welcoming customers.”
