Lidl staff to get third pay rise in a year this month - but there's a catch

Lidl staff are to see another pay rise from this month through an additional £13million investment in wages.

Entry-level staff at the supermarket will see their hourly pay rate rise by 10p from £10.90 an hour to £11.

But pay for London workers will remain the same.

Staff within the M25 will continue to be paid at an hourly rate of £11.95.

The new pay rate was announced by Lidl today alongside new appointments at the supermarkets head office.

This small increase in wages is the third seen by Lidl staff over the last 12 months, following pay increases that happened in March and October 2022.

The October wage rises saw around 23,500 of its Lidl staff earning up to £12.00 and £13.00.

Currently, Lidl says it has over 28,000 employees in the UK with over 950 stores and 13 distribution centres.

Since then, however, other major UK supermarkets have announced pay rises for their staff in response to the rising cost of living.

It hasn't been just once either, some supermarket chains have announced several pay rises over the last 12 months.

Most supermarket chains are now paying their staff a minimum of £11 an hour.

Recently Asda announced its pay rates will be rising to £11 per hour from April 2023 and £11.11 per hour from July this year.

The rates for workers inside the M25 will increase from £11.27 an hour to £12.17 in April, then to £12.28 an hour in July.

This makes it the third time Asda has increased its hourly pay rates over the last year.

Tesco also pushed its hourly rates past the £11 mark with its recent increase taking their rate to £11.02 from April 2023.

Sainsbury's kicked off the New Year by announcing its staff were to get an increase taking their hourly pay from £10.25 an hour to £11, and from £11.30 to £11.95 for those in London.

Aldi also announced a pay rise in January which saw its staff get paid £11 per hour nationally with store assistants within the M25 being paid £12.45.

M&S staff recently saw their wages rise with the retailer upping its customer assistance staff from £10.20 to £10.90, with employees in London stores will see their hourly wages upped from £11.25 to £12.05.
