The poster features the familiar yellow and blue colours along with the Lidl logo and a person peering through binoculars. It has just four words - ‘Keep Your Friends Close’.

Danny McLaughlin posted about the amusing sign on Twitter, describing it as “top trolling”.

He wrote: “Lidl are opening a new store in Galway. It’s next door to an Aldi. This sign is facing the Aldi store. Top trolling.”

A few Twitter users finished the sentence: “And keep your enemies closer!”

Thousands of people have ‘liked’ the Tweet with many praising the humour.

“Well played Lidl,” one person wrote.

Another added: “I absolutely adore marketing like this.”

A third said: “I love when multinational companies are banterful.”

Other responses included “brilliant”, “nice work” and “priceless”.

With the stores now right next to each other, another person joked: “Soon you’ll be able to say, ‘I’m off to Laldi’!”

The new state-of-the-art Lidl Knocknacarra store officially opened on Thursday, creating 30 permanent jobs.

The 1,546sqm shop floor has high ceilings, wide aisles and incorporates a large bakery area with freshly baked breads and pastries.

The environmentally friendly shop has roof mounted solar panels and is powered by 100% green renewable electricity.

Commenting at the opening, store manager Pauline McLoughlin said: “We are delighted to finally open the doors to our brand-new store in Knocknacarra. The store will offer customers an even better shopping experience with its spacious design, ample parking and sustainability features throughout.

“The new store is a positive addition to the local area of Knocknacarra making our fantastic range of top-quality produce available at the best possible prices. We look forward to welcoming customers.”
