Lexington police offering weekly informational sessions to families of homicide victims

Lexington families who have lost loved ones through homicide are being invited to participate in Surviving Onward Sessions. The first S.O.S. session took place Wednesday night at the Dunbar Community Center on Upper Street. Robin Anderson is a victim advocate with Lexington Police. She said the number of participants can vary from week to week, but the session with a police detective often attracts a larger group.

“That seems to be a real big one that families like to get more of that knowledge, so we want to make sure that they are aware of that date,” said Anderson.

Anderson noted various community partners participate in the weekly sessions. She added that includes therapists who can address the grieving process.

Although not structured as a support group program, Anderson said these weekly meetings are supportive in nature. And so, she noted, the group size is typically under 20 people.

“They learn to encourage each other and help each other and are grieving together and understanding each other, so it is nicer to have a smaller group where they can feel open to share and make those connections,” said Anderson.

Anderson said police care about the families and their cases. The sessions occur each Wednesday night at six o'clock and run through October 11th.
