Lexington city leaders are working to make corrections in property taxation in taxing districts across Fayette County. One city council member says another taxing issue deserves attention.
More than 11 hundred property owners are expected to see changes in their tax bills for such things as garbage collection, street lights, and street cleaning. A large number of these citizens are not paying for services they receive. Fourth District Council Member Susan Lamb says there’s another matter to address. Lamb said door-to-door pickup of recycling and yard waste is not covered in this taxation.
“When that Charter was passed in 1974, that’s what we’re still operating on and we have increased the services to each individual property owner and we need to update that,” said Lamb.
Lamb noted the City Charter could be opened up to address this taxing issue while not putting up for discussion any other section of the local government roadmap.
In considering other taxing district changes, Lamb added that could take a while to finalize.
“When you are changing property taxes within the urban service district, it is not something that happens in January and you see it in July. It is a long process. It’s almost a year and a half process in order for you to see the actual numbers,” said Lamb.
Members of the Council’s budget committee got an update on the taxing district changes during their meeting last week.
