The hunt for who Leonardo DiCaprio was mouthing to at the Golden Globes continues, after Teyana Taylor backtracked on her earlier claim that it was her.
The wild goose chase began when a clip of DiCaprio speaking cartoonishly to someone off camera at the awards ceremony went viral on social media.
DiCaprio’s animated expressions took off like wildfire as folks attempted to lip-read and decode a chat from a star we famously know very little about beyond an affinity for pasta.
The moment happened during the commercial break, and since the camera never panned away from DiCaprio’s face, the identity of who he was speaking to became a mystery.
Taylor, who starred opposite DiCaprio in One Battle After Another, briefly solved the whodunnit when she claimed it was her at the other end of the camera.
“He was talking to me,” Taylor, who collected a Supporting Actress Award at the ceremony, told Access Hollywood. “I was probably just laughing and kiki-ing back and had no clue what he was saying.”
Like any good detective, Taylor had evidence, citing lip-readers who determined that DiCaprio had said the word “K-pop” in reference to the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters.
“I want to say we may have been talking about K-Pop Demon Hunters, because I was so happy when they won. So I was over there jamming. I think he caught me jammin’ and that’s when we started talking about it. I just don’t remember what he was saying,” Taylor claimed.
But then came the point in the case when shit hits the fan. Perhaps in a state of post-win dizziness, Taylor later admitted her memory of the interaction was hazy after calling DiCaprio to get to the bottom of it.
“I thought I broke the DaVinci code,” Taylor joked on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. “I called him and I was like, ‘You can’t be talking to me, were you talking to me?’ Because I already told people you were talking to me.’”
Our only clue turned out to be a red herring when Taylor relayed how DiCaprio “had two K-Pop Demon Hunters conversations that night”, prompting the actress to have the same question that’s been racking our brains all week.
“Who else are you kiki-ing with like that? Who else are you chewing your invisible gum with?” Taylor said.
In a revelation that’s sure to make this a cold case, Taylor said DiCaprio didn’t “even remember who he was talking to”. While all that sleuthing seemingly led us to a dead end, we can at least deduce what DiCaprio was saying thanks to a famous lip-reading TikToker.
Doing her darndest to crack the case, Jackie G reckons DiCaprio said: “I was watching you with the K-pop thing. You were like [peers over looking confused] is that? Who is the K-pop? Are they? Is it? We were laughing – we were like, is that? Is that K-Pop?’”
That’s the best line-read I’ve ever heard him deliver, and he has starred in some classics.
What all of this amounts to is a mystery on par with Knives Out, to the point where I half-expect Benoit Blac to rock up with a magnifying glass in tow.
We may never know who was at the receiving end of DiCaprio’s chat, but we at least know his favourite food is “pasta, pasta, and more pasta”.
