Good news, Girls fans – Lena Dunham has revealed she has an idea in mind for a film that would reveal what Hannah Horvath and co. are doing now.
Hailed as the Sex and the City of its time, Girls’ six seasons followed the struggling young writer – who may, or may not, have been the voice of a generation – as she and her close friends tried to find their way in New York.
The show ended with a divisive series six finale in 2017, which saw Dunham’s Hannah grappling with motherhood after conceiving a baby with a surf instructor, supported by her divorcee BFF Marnie Michaels (played by Alison Williams).
Having spent much of the season not on talking terms, Jessa Johansson (Jemima Kirke) patched things up with Hannah while a newly-engaged Shoshanna Shapiro (Zosia Mamet) cut ties with the whole gang.
In a new interview on SiriusXM, Dunham responded to calls for a follow-up by admitting she would “love to do” a film.
“I have to say, I’ve got a little plot line in my brain. I do,” she added. “It’s impossible not to think about where they are now.”
The 39-year-old added that she has a new text group with her fellow leading ladies and Andrew Rannells, who played Hannah’s ex-boyfriend turned gay BFF Elijah Krantz, which is called “Survivors of the Crackcident”, a nod to one of the show’s most hilarious episodes.
Dunham continued: “Jemima will pop in with the best take on like, ‘Jess is really into RFK Jr.’ and you’re like, ‘Of course she is. Of course she is.’ She does not want anyone getting vaccines. She is pissed.”
“I just see them, and also, those are my muses,” she said of her castmates. “So, I think it’s an obvious thing. We don’t want to come back to the party too early. We want to be appropriately missed.”
Dunham (and most other Millennial women) are enjoying a Girls renaissance at the moment, thanks to the showrunner’s new memoir, Famesick.
The exposing book sees Dunham, who was just 23 when she sold Girls to HBO, reflect on making the series and share details from her personal life at the time, including her five-year relationship with Jack Antonoff.
She also opens up about working with Adam Driver, claiming her co-star was “verbally aggressive” and “physically imposing” towards her.
Discussing an incident that took place after she forgot her lines during a rehearsal, Dunham writes: “All that came out was a stammer – until finally, Adam screamed, ‘F***ING SAY SOMETHING’ and hurled a chair at the wall next to me.” Driver is yet to address the claims.
