Ghost of Yōtei is getting its co-op multiplayer mode next month. Sucker Punch confirmed Ghost of Yōtei Legends will launch on March 10 as part of patch 1.5, free for everyone who owns the base game.
Legends is built around taking down supernatural versions of the Yōtei Six in co-op mode with friends. The mode launches with two mission types available immediately and a third arriving later in April. As is always the case with Sony, a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play online.
Survival is the first format at launch, it features four-player matches against escalating waves on one of four maps. Each map includes a territory-control subsystem tied to buffs and penalties, as the players will have to hold locations to activate a Blessing that helps the team, but losing control triggers a Curse that makes the fight harder. Sucker Punch says every map will have its own unique Blessings and Curses, which should keep runs from turning into the same routine every time.
Story missions are smaller and designed for two players instead of four, and there are only twelve of them in total. After every set of three Story missions, Legends unlocks an Incursion: a four-player assault on a stronghold tied to a member of the Yōtei Six, ending in a boss battle.
The April update adds the third mission type, a Raid. This is going to be the toughest content in Legends, with players expected to face the Dragon and Lord Saito himself.
Legends will have four playable classes: Samurai, Archer, Mercenary, and Shinobi. Every class uses a katana and a ranged weapon by default, but their specializations differ: Samurai uses the ōdachi, Archer uses the spear, Mercenary fights with dual katana, and Shinobi uses the kusarigama.
The whole thing is directly comparable to Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends, which launched as a free update in 2020 and became a hit with the co-op players. While Ghost of Tsushima later received a fully-fledged paid Iki Island DLC, the developers at Sucker Punch consider Atsu’s story in Ghost of Yōtei to be finished, but they aren’t ruling out any future story content.
