Leeds United urged to re-sign Newcastle misfit Chris Wood in January amid Rodrigo claims

Re-signing Chris Wood could “free up” Rodrigo to play as a number 10 for Leeds United. That is the view of former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, after reports linked the New Zealand international with a shock return.

Wood spent two seasons at Elland Road, leaving in 2017 after emerging as one of the Championship’s most feared strikers. An impressive 44 goals in 88 games earned him a Premier League move to Burnley.

Under Sean Dyche’s stewardship, the 31-year-old developed into a reputable top-flight striker. Newcastle United triggered a £25million release clause in January - their hour of desperate need - but a move has not worked out.

Just four goals in 33 games has seen Wood become a plan B from the bench, with his move to Tyneside always regarded as a short-term fix. A return to Yorkshire could be on the cards amid Leeds' lack of options up front.

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Everton forward Campbell has backed a possible comeback. The 52-year-old believes Rodrigo could also benefit from playing alongside an out-and-out striker.

“Someone like Wood coming in would be a very good piece of January business,” Campbell said. “He knows the league, he’s Premier League proven and he’s very rarely injured, which is important.

“That would give them a bit more of a focal point. Although Rodrigo has done pretty well in that striker role, adding a Wood will free up Rodrigo to do other things in that number 10 role. Chris Wood has scored goals wherever he’s gone, and that’s exactly what they are needing.”
