Leeds United's perilous position outlined as relegation run-in leaves little room for optimism

Leeds United's survival hopes suffered a hammer blow after they fell to a fifth defeat in their last seven matches on Sunday when Bournemouth breezed past Javi Gracia's side 4-1 at Dean Court. The result all but secures the Cherries' place in next season's Premier League and leaves Leeds in desperate need to stop the rot before they run out of time.

The current relegation battle has been one of the closest in recent memory and while Leeds remain out of the bottom three, a combination of desperate form and a tough run-in has left fans fearing the worst.

Here is a look at remaining fixtures and how relegation picture looks...

Current table

Ahead of Monday evening's match - more on that shortly - here is how the current table looks:

16. Leeds United P34, -24GD, 30Pts

17. Nottingham Forest P34, -32GD, 30Pts

18. Leicester City P33, -13GD, 29Pts

19. Everton P33, -25GD, 28Pts

20. Southampton P34, -32GD, 24Pts

Despite their poor run, Leeds remain out of the drop zone by a point, with Nottingham Forest's last-gasp defeat at Brentford on Saturday ensuring that the Tricky Trees did not move past the Whites. Southampton's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United leaves them six points adrift with four games remaining and needing snookers to survive the drop.

There is one more match to play in the round of fixtures and it's a big one, with Leicester City hosting Everton. A win for either side would see them leapfrog Leeds and Forest and move into 16th place, while a draw would see Leicester up into 16th place and leave the Toffees still in 19th place.

Next round of fixtures

While Leeds know they cannot drop into the bottom three this weekend, they could find themselves in the drop zone next week as they have one of the toughest fixtures in European football awaiting them. The Whites head to the Etihad to face table-topping Manchester City and then face a nervous wait until Monday to see how the rest of the division's stragglers get on.

Man City vs Leeds United - Saturday, May 6, 3pm

Fulham vs Leicester City - Monday, May 8, 3pm

Brighton vs Everton - Monday, May 8, 5.30pm

Nottingham Forest vs Southampton - Monday, May 8, 8pm

Final three weeks

Once next weekend is out of the way, just three fixtures will remain for each of the sides in the relegation quagmire. Here there are:

Leeds United - Newcastle (A), West Ham (A), Tottenham (H)

Nottingham Forest - Chelsea (A), Arsenal (H), Crystal Palace (A)

Leicester City - Liverpool (H), Newcastle (A), West Ham (H)

Everton - Man City (H), Wolves (A), Bournemouth (H)

Southampton - Fulham (H), Brighton (A), Liverpool (H)
