Leeds United starlet Joe Gelhardt has been shortlisted for the 2022 Golden Boy award after an impressive breakthrough season at Elland Road. The forward only made his Premier League debut in October, but he has established himself as a regular in the Leeds side, particularly since Jesse Marsh took over at Elland Road.
His 20 top flight appearances this season yielded two goals and four assists, with efforts coming against Chelsea and Norwich City, and it seems he has impressed enough to earn a nomination for one of the most prestigious prizes in Europe.
Previously won by the likes of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Kylian Mbappe, the Golden Boy award is won by the continent's best player under the age of 21 and Gelhardt has been included on a 100 player shortlist.

The 20-year-old, who joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic in 2020, is joined on the list by a number of players based on these shores, including Harvey Elliot and Fabio Carvalho of Liverpool, Anthony Elanga and Amad Diallo of Manchester United and Wolves striker Fabio Silva. England international Jude Bellingham has also been shortlisted after another impressive campaign with Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid and France star Eduardo Camavinga, Bayern Munich’s duo Jamal Musiala and Ryan Gravenberch and last season’s winner of the award, Pedri, have also been recognised. The winner of the award will be announced later this year.
The Golden Boy award was established back in 2003 by Italian news outlet Tuttosport, with journalists from across Europe being asked to vote.
