Leeds United news as Jesse Marsch opens up on long-term plans and Ryan Kent links analysed

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Thursday, March 24.

Marsch’s long term aims

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has opened up on how he envisages to create a long-term plan at Elland Road. Marsch is coming up to almost a month in charge of the Whites in which he has won two and lost two of his opening four matches.

Marsch is a product of the Red Bull philosophy, where they place a huge emphasis on the nurturing of young talent into their first teams. And in an interview with the Athletic, this is what the 48-year-old would like to achieve during his time at Leeds, referencing how the academy can benefit the club both on the pitch, and financially too.

He said: “My aim is to build a playing philosophy similar to what I’ve developed over the years and to integrate the academy in a way that can impact our playing model as well as our business model. Year by year, step by step, I want to take the club closer to competing for trophies.

“That has to be our goal. It’s not easy, especially in a league like this, but that’s at the core of every decision we’re making. So, in the short term, stay in the league. Then, long term, build it piece by piece. And by that, I mean continue to build because a lot of really good things were done before I came. I wouldn’t want it to seem otherwise.”

Kent links

Leeds United have once again been linked with a summer move for Rangers winger Ryan Kent despite the departure of Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa was a known admirer of Kent and the Whites have tried to sign him both in the Championship and Premier League under his management.

However, with Bielsa now gone, reports are again emerging that Leeds remain keen on the 25-year-old, with a view to a summer move. Kent’s contract is set to expire at the end of next season and so it could be the right time for Rangers to cash in on him.

Southampton opposites

When Leeds United travelled down to the South Coast in October to face Southampton, they were without their three key men. Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Raphinha were all absent from the squad, while their two first choice full backs and Robin Koch missed out too.

That game, too, was on the back of an international break, that Phillips was forced to withdraw from and Raphinha’s Brazil had played just 36 hours before Leeds were scheduled to kick off at St. Mary’s. This time, though, for varying reasons, the Whites’ squad looks in far better shape.
