Ex-Premier League referee Peter Walton issues verdict on Luke Ayling decision
Former Premier League referee Peter Walton believes that the penalty awarded to Arsenal against Leeds for Luke Ayling's challenge on Gabriel Jesus was the correct decision after it left the BT Sport studio split.
With the game still at 0-0, Jesus' touch in the box left Ayling stranded and he clipped the Brazilian's knee having dived in, who subsequently netted from the spot to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead.
That would eventually snowball into a 4-1 win for Mike Arteta's side, but many fans on social media and pundits on the TV took both sides of the argument.
However, Walton seemed to settle the conversation down when he gave his verdict on BT Sport Score after Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage were convinced it was a foul whereas Stephen Craigan was horrified by the decision.
"Yes, [it's the] correct decision.
"What’s happened there is Ayling has bought the dummy from Jesus and gone to ground so early. And it’s his second motion with his leg – he’s left his leg there – which Jesus hits.
"[Stephen Craigan] is saying he’s gone over easy. But it’s a penalty kick. He’s impeded his opponent."
