Leeds United fans mixed in their response over speculation Raphinha could stay at the club

Raphinha’s desire to move to Barcelona is undeniable. The winger, despite having a £60million bid accepted for him by Chelsea and a potential pay-rise up to £120,00-per-week, is delaying personal talks with the Blues and waiting for the Blaugrana’s approach.

But that approach is becoming increasingly problematic, with the Catalan giants either unable or unwilling to meet Chelsea’s bid. Reports of a €60million bid on Friday were as close as they’ve come, but that deal is thought to be in instalments whereas the Whites want the money upfront.

Such is Raphinha’s desire to move to the Camp Nou, according to ESPN (via Transferchanger ), that he is willing to remain at the club for six months or a year while he and Leeds wait for Barcelona to sort out their finances.

Reports of this decision should be taken with a fairly large pinch of salt, maybe a tablespoon's worth, but the logic remains that if the Brazilian is hell-bent on a move to Catalonia then signing a long-term deal at another European level club would not help his cause.

Whites fans have been mixed in their response to the speculation, with many pointing out the winger’s contract situation. Raphinha’s deal with Leeds runs until 2024, making this summer the last in which he can be sold for close to his full valuation. Should he stay for another season, however, and refuse to sign a new deal, then Leeds would have to face losing their star at a cut-price next year rather than on a free in 2024.

But if the club can tie the Brazilian down to a new deal, convincing him that the insertion of a release clause will help his chances of a move next year, then they can keep their star for another season while insuring themselves against future sales.

There is also the argument of the player’s state of mind, should he be refused a move to the Camp Nou this summer. The former Rennes man has by no means been causing trouble in his bid for a move away, but could be left frustrated at another year fighting for Premier League survival instead of enjoying European football.

Leeds’ hope of having the best possible Raphinha next season would be helped massively by the World Cup later in the year. The winger has had a breakthrough year for his country after his debut in October, but competition for the front-three is fierce and he knows he must be in top-form going into the winter tournament if he is to star on the biggest stage.

There is no doubt that if Raphinha were to stay, he would give his all. He proved as such during last season’s run-in, at times single-handedly carrying the creative burden in the knowledge that relegation would almost definitely lead to a swift and seamless departure.

On the other hand, there are plenty who accept the winger’s desire to leave and want the saga finished. Leeds may have to accept a slightly lower fee or staggered payments if they are to move on with business of their own, rather than sell a week before the new season and panic buy a replacement.

Raphinha’s eyes are firmly set on the Camp Nou, of that there is no doubt. The next few weeks of negotiations and speculation will test the nerve of the player, as well as both clubs involved.
