Illan Meslier and Liam Cooper have earned a spot in Who Scored’s Premier League team of the week. Both players were essential in Leeds United grinding out a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park.
A much-fancied Newcastle United side - unbeaten in 14 games across all competitions - were thwarted by excellent Leeds defending. Despite failing to keep a clean sheet in their previous nine outings, Jesse Marsch’s men dug deep to frustrate the high-flying Magpies.
Meslier, in particular, made key saves in the second half to keep Newcastle at bay. A vital away point lifted the Whites three points clear of the relegation zone. Marsch spoke post-match about his desire to improve Leeds’ defensive record during the World Cup break.

Building on that new-found sturdiness is essential if Marsch and Co want to end their four-game run without a win. Another out-of-form team, West Ham United, should provide an easier test for Leeds when they travel to Elland Road on Wednesday night.
Meslier and Cooper will no doubt keep their place for the clash against David Moyes’ side. The duo featured in the team of the week alongside Arsenal trio Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah. Aston Villa winger Emi Buendia also featured for his heroics in the shock 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
