Leeds United Australia diary day eight: Perth plans before Palace final test

Leeds United travelled to Perth on Tuesday for the final leg of their pre-season tour of Australia. The Whites spent a week in Queensland taking in games against Brisbane Roar and Aston Villa and they’ll meet Crystal Palace in Perth before heading back to West Yorkshire to continue preparing for the new Premier League season.

Here’s what happened on day eight of the club’s time Down Under.

Scooter friends

The Whites were afforded some down time on Monday and that appeared to creep into Tuesday morning, too, as a number of players were seen exploring the city of Brisbane before travelling to the airport in the afternoon. Pascal Struijk was spotted by Leeds Live on the back of one of the many e-scooters available to hire around the city centre, while Leif Davis and Jack Harrison were also noticed sharing a scooter along one of Brisbane’s busy shopping streets.

Leeds have worked hard during their time in Australia with Jesse Marsch keen to get some key work done as the new campaign nears. As such, their free time was well-earned, but it’ll be back to business today in Western Australia.

A warm welcome

United flew to Perth from Brisbane Domestic Airport on Tuesday afternoon and once again players could be seen mixing with supporters both before and after their flight. With a number of fans in the airport to make the journey across the country to follow the Whites in Western Australia, members of the squad were seen taking photos and chatting while meandering through the airports shops.

They were then greeted by a small group of around 50 supporters at Perth Airport to give them an example of the type of support they can expect while in the city. Perth is renowned for having a strong British presence and it is hoped a crowd of 50,000 will be in attendance on Friday night to see Marsch’s side face a young Palace team.

Perth plans

Leeds have a jam-packed schedule over the next few days in Perth before they fly back to the UK on Saturday, following their final tour match at the Optus Stadium. Marsch, Patrick Bamford and Dan James made an appearance alongside the Premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan, at the Gage Roads Brewery in Fremantle as the politician welcomed the club to the state and the city, three years after their last visit in 2019.

The Whites will the hold an open training session at the Fremantle Oval, home of local Aussie rules side South Fremantle, where Marsch will also hold a press conference. A handful of players will make the journey back to Gages Roads Brewery on Thursday to take part in a fan Q&A session, while Michael Bridges and Tony Dorigo will host a legends event in the hours leading up to the clash at the Optus Stadium.

Fans will have the opportunity to travel to the game in style on Friday, too, with a couple of special ferries scheduled to take them down the Swan River from Fremantle to the ground.
