Leeds set for wintry showers on Monday as big freeze sets in

A big freeze is on its way to Leeds overnight on Monday with temperatures plummeting and a chance wintry showers this afternoon.

Across the area we will see temperatures drop into negative figures as a new cold spell takes hold in March. Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place for the north east of the country.

On Monday we will see some unsettled spells with wintry showers in the afternoon as temperatures begin to drop. This gives a good chance of sleet or snow at around 5pm.

Temperatures are set to reach a maximum of 7C between 11am and 2pm before they begin to drop sharply around sunset at 17.52. There is a good chance of showers throughout the morning and gusty winds will begin to pick up at around 10am.

Looking ahead, Tuesday is set to be bitterly cold but bright with temperatures edging above freezing at around 12 noon. Wednesday is colder still and Thursday and Friday are promising a strong chance of snow.

Today:

A band of showery rain, turning wintry over hills, will clear south during the morning. Sunny spells and snow showers will follow, with showers most frequent near the coast. Feeling cold and becoming breezy. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Tonight:

Snow showers will continue this evening and overnight, particularly near the coast. A widespread frost will develop, with icy patches where surfaces are damp from showers. Minimum temperature -4 °C.

Tuesday:

A very cold start, with widespread frost and icy patches. Snow showers will gradually become lighter and less frequent during the day, with some sunny spells, particularly further inland. Maximum temperature 4 °C.
