Leeds hit with 'extreme' amber heatwave warning as temperatures to peak at 31C on Thursday

The Met Office has issued an 'extreme' amber heat warning for parts of south Leeds with temperatures expected to peak at 31C today (Thurs).

The heatwave warning will remain in place until midnight on Sunday (August 14). It comes just weeks after the UK experienced record-breaking temperatures.

This week's hot spell will sweep across parts of England and Wales and the Met Office has issued an amber heatwave warning for parts of South Leeds. Many other parts of Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield, Dewsbury and Pontefract will also be affected.

The Met Office is warning people vulnerable to extreme heat that they are likely to experience 'adverse health effects' while 'some changes in working practices and daily routines' are likely to be required, according to the forecaster. There is also an increased chance that some 'heat-sensitive systems and equipment' may fail.

Temperatures are expected to peak in Leeds today at 31C and could reach 30C on Friday and Sunday. Dan Rudman, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Thanks to persistent high pressure over the UK, temperatures will be rising day-on-day through this week and an extreme heat warning has been issued.

"Temperatures are expected to peak at 35C on Friday and Saturday (in south England), or even an isolated 36C on Saturday. Elsewhere will see temperatures widely into the high 20s and low 30s Celsius. Coupled with the high daytime temperatures there will be some warm nights."
