New data has shown the Leeds estate which is Yorkshire's shoplifting hotspot. The Swarcliffe neighbourhood ranked number one out of the top 10 areas in the county, with two other areas ranking in the overall list.
Swarcliffe was ranked 11th in England and Wales having a rate of 112.0 crimes per 10 shops. The overall number of crimes in Yorkshire recorded in 2021 and 2022 was 24,086 which is the equivalent of three crimes per hour.
That was a 36% increase on the 17,771 shoplifting crimes that were committed the previous year - although numbers were likely down because many shops were closed for part of 2020.

Leeds City Centre attracted the most crime, with a total of 1,513 shoplifting offences recorded in 2021-22 - more than double the 743 crimes the previous year.
Three areas of Leeds made the list including Swarcliffe, Hawksworth and West Park and Tinshill. Swarcliffe ranked first with Hawksworth and West Park and Tinshill ranking fourth and eighth respectively.
