Leeds' cheapest and most expensive Wetherspoons revealed in new price map

Wetherspoons pubs appeal because they sell drinks for considerably less than their rivals.

The chain and British town centre staple keeps prices down because it owns the buildings, can buy its booze from whoever it fancies and has tight policies for reducing wastage while encouraging customers to buy more. And while a 'Spoons' pub is almost always cheaper than its nearest competitor, prices of its most popular drinks vary from pub to pub.

This 'Cheap Tipple Finder' map by Pantry and Larder reveals the cheapest and most expensive Spoons pubs for 20 of its bestselling drinks. And across Leeds, there's some real variation.

Broadly you can split Spoons pubs by price into four tiers. Wetherspoons pubs in the outer suburbs and satellite towns were the cheapest. Pubs in inner residential areas were slightly more expensive and more expensive again in the city centre.

But the Wetherspoons at Leeds Train Station deserved a tier of its own. Anyone who has killed time waiting for a train in a station pub will tell you how expensive they are.

Wetherspoons at Leeds Station was either more expensive or the same as Spoons pubs in the city centre. More often it was the former.

The difference in the price of a drink between the cheapest and most expensive could be marked. For example, a pint of Stowford Press cider cost 50% more at Leeds Station than it did at seven Spoons pubs in the suburbs and satellite towns.

A pint of Carling lager cost £2.65 at the Clothier's Arms, Yeadon, but £3.89 at Leeds Station – 47% more. Don't complain too loudly though; the same pint at Wetherspoons in Leicester Square, London, cost £5.79!

So why does the price vary? Wetherspoons aims to be 'competitive within the local area'. People are prepared to pay more to drink in the city centre than they are in suburbs. Also operating costs in high-profile areas are greater.
