Latest Greater Manchester coronavirus infection rates as cases continue to nosedive

Coronavirus infection rates are continuing to nosedive in all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. Wigan continues to have the highest rate in the region.

The borough recorded an infection rate of 121.9 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 1, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. It means it is the only borough in Greater Manchester where the rate is higher than the national average.

The rate in the other nine is lower than the national average. The lowest infection rate is in Manchester, where it stands at 81.7 cases per 100,000 people.

In Greater Manchester as a whole, the infection rate is now 99.1 cases per 100,000 population. The infection rate in the region is lower than the national average, which is 116.8 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 2,809 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on May 1. The Greater Manchester weekly total has decreased by 1,636 cases compared to the previous week, which means the infection rate was down 37 per cent in the last week.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on May 1, a total of 373 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 49 fewer than the week before, a fall of 15pc.

On Tuesday May 3, there were 17 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is the same as a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending May 1, a total of 43 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 15 fewer than the week before.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 989,058 confirmed coronavirus cases in Greater Manchester. There has been a total of 9,237 deaths.

Cases reported in each of the ten boroughs

Manchester

Manchester, which has the lowest infection rate in the region, recorded 454 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 1, which is 265 fewer than the previous seve days.

The coronavirus infection rate in Manchester is now 81.7 cases per 100,000 people and is down by 37 per cent week-on-week.

Wigan

In Wigan, there were 403 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 1, which is 175 fewer than the previous seven days.

Wigan has the highest infection rate in the region. The infection rate in Wigan is down slightly compared with the previous day and the week-on-week trend is down by 30 per cent.

Trafford

There were 269 positive tests over the last week in Trafford, which is 144 fewer than in the previous week.

The week-on-week trend in Trafford is down by 35 per cent and the latest infection rate is 113.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Tameside

There was a fall of 37 per cent in cases in Tameside over the week ending May 1, and the infection rate is now 94.2 cases per 100,000 population.

Tameside recorded 214 positive Covid-19 tests over the seven-day period, and that is 127 fewer than the previous week.

Stockport

In Stockport, the latest infection rate is 111.1 cases per 100,000 people and the number of cases has gone down by 40 per cent.

A total of 327 people tested positive for Covid in Stockport over the seven days ending on May 1, which is 220 fewer than the week before.

Salford

Salford saw a total of 253 cases in the week ending May 1, which is 188 fewer than the previous week. That is a fall of 43 per cent.

In Salford, the most recent coronavirus infection rate is now 96.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Rochdale

The trend is down in Rochdale, where there were 218 positive Covid-19 tests in the week ending May 1, which is 102 fewer than the previous seven days. That is down by 32 per cent compared to the previous week.

The latest infection rate in Rochdale is 97.5 cases per 100,000 people, which is lower than the national average.

Oldham

Oldham is an area where the trend is down. The latest infection rate here is 88 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 209 cases recorded in Oldham, which is 114 fewer than the previous week - a fall of 35 per cent.

Bury

Bury recorded 193 coronavirus cases, which is 121 fewer than in the previous seven days.

The latest infection rate in Bury is 101.2 cases per 100,000 people and that is down 39 per cent week-on-week.

Bolton

In Bolton, the number of cases is down by 40 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 93.3 cases per 100,000 population.

There were 269 positive Covid-19 tests in Bolton in the week ending May 1, which was 180 fewer than the previous seven days.
