SAN FRANCISCO — Left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett had his best start of the season on Saturday and the Miami Marlins finally provided the run support he needed after he left the mound.
Jon Berti’s eighth-inning single to right field scored Garrett Hampson, who walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to plate the only run in the Marlins’ 1-0 win over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
Miami improves to 24-22 on the season and 15-2 in one-run games. The Giants fall to 21-24. Saturday was Miami’s second shutout win of the season.
Berti’s hit backed a stellar start from Garrett, who threw 6 1/3 shutout innings and struck out eight while giving up just one hit and one walk. It was the deepest he has pitched into a game across eight starts and the second consecutive game in which he struck out eight batters. Of his 76 pitches, 57 landed for strikes.
Garrett retired 15 consecutive batters to end his outing.
JT Chargois (2/3 inning), Tanner Scott (2/3 inning) and Dylan Floro (1 1/3 inning) provided 2 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen, with Floro picking up his fifth save of the season.
