Late Gakpo goal denies former manager Klopp first win as Germany coach

  • Cody Gakpo struck late in stoppage time to deny his former manager Jurgen Klopp a debut victory in charge of Germany in the Nations League .
  • The Netherlands , also embarking on a new era under Xavi , thought they had taken the lead through another of Klopp's former players in captain Virgil van Dijk , only for his header in the 16th minute to be ruled out for an offence committed by Brian Brobbey.
  • Brobbey was subsequently involved in Germany’s controversial opener, as Klopp’s squad opted against pausing play to allow the Sunderland striker to receive treatment for a hamstring injury.
  • They then scored through Felix Nmecha, sparking the wrath of the hosts.
  • The Dutch probed throughout the second half for an equaliser and ultimately got what they deserved in the dying moments, with Gakpo latching onto a deep delivery to convert on the volley.
