Lasting memorial to brave heroes of Korean War unveiled

A lasting memorial to the brave heroes who fought in the Korean War has been unveiled in the Bathgate Hills.

Veterans from around Scotland gathered at the country’s only memorial to the war at Witchcraig in Bathgate for the dedication of a new bench.

The handsome metal seat replaces a wooden one that had fallen into disrepair over the years.

The bench was installed recently thanks to members of the Black Watch Association and a special dedication ceremony was carried out by the Rev Alex Forsyth.

Rob Scott, chair of the Black Watch Association, explained: “Our Fife branch had a bench there that had fallen into disrepair because it was wooden so we decided to get a metal one re-dedicate the bench.

“We all went along and had a parade and we were also joined by Tommy Cannon, who was in Korea, and travelled from Peebles.

“Tommy was over the moon, he’s 90, I was the next in line to him in terms of age, when you start to talk about people who were company commanders and platoon commanders in Korea, and we both knew who these people were so we made him feel at home.”
