Lando Norris insists Franco Colapinto should receive a one-race ban after causing a multi-car crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The McLaren F1 driver, who endured a torrid day in Baku, had to retire after a misjudged manoeuvre from Colapinto during a safety car restart late in the race.
Colapinto surged up the inside and clattered into his teammate Pierre Gasly, who subsequently knocked Norris into the wall. All three drivers were forced to retire.
"Give him a ban, it's quite simple,” an angry Norris said afterwards. "The FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff.
"It's careless from people. It costs a lot of money. All my parts are in the bin now, so people should just get banned for this kind of driving. (They) don't deserve to be in Formula 1.
"If you cause a crash on a restart like this, yeah, you should have at least a one-race ban."
Max Verstappen, however, who finished second behind race winner George Russell, insists Norris’ calls for a ban were “a bit much” – and Russell was in a similar camp.
“I think safety-car restarts, cold tyres, a very small mistake can have big consequences,” the Mercedes driver said.
“From what I saw today, that’s what it looked like. I think, personally, race bans should come from drivers intentionally doing something very dangerous and very reckless. I think it was unfortunate.”
Colapinto, for his part, immediately apologised to his teammate Gasly and Alpine outfit.
"I can be sorry to everyone,” he said. “It's been a big mistake, of course. I just locked up and then I was very out of control."
It was a day to forget overall for Norris’ McLaren team, with Oscar Piastri finishing outside the top-10 after a late lock-up at turn one.
