Lanarkshire photographer is picture perfect as she wins top award

An East Kilbride photographer was picture perfect when she won a prestigious award for her adorable shot of a newborn baby.

Mum-of-three Alice Alves, 54, who grew up in the Village with her parents GPs in the town, was awarded the title of Master Photographers Scotland (MPS) Newborn Photographer of the year 2022.

The ceremony took place over Zoom recently but Alice is looking forward to donning her glad rags next year for the awards ceremony in-person.

It's not the first award from MPS she has picked up in her career, having won the Baby Photographer of the Year, Cherubs Photographer of the Year and an Award of Excellence in Family Portraiture, all in 2019.

Alice told Lanarkshire Live : "I was absolutely delighted and surprised to win as I was up against some of the best baby photographers in Scotland whose work is amazing.

"The Master Photographer Association, which has been established for 70 years, is a much respected professional body of photographers whose members have to be skilled to a high standard in their photography and maintain a professional working relationship with their clients.

"And my winning image just happens to be a baby from East Kilbride - wee Isla Brown who came in for a newborn photo session along with parents Fiona and Martin in the middle of March."

Alice has spent all her working life as a photographer, running a studio in the Village for 13 years before converting her garage at home into a studio about four years ago.

She went on: "When I left college I worked on cruise ships as a photographer, where I met my husband.

"When my own kids were growing up I concentrated on baby photography, then for a long time I did other things in photography.

"I had the studio in the Village but about four years ago decided to convert my garage and work from home and I'm back doing baby and family shots again.

"I am just extremely lucky to be doing something I absolutely love and I have always loved children so it's a natural fit for me.

"But, of course, to get the award is a real honour as well. My husband and sons are really proud as well.

"Two of the kids are grown up now and I'm equally as proud of all my boys. One of them runs Riccos in the town centre and Bica in the Village and is doing a fantastic job with them."
