Lanarkshire murder victim was 'great young lad who respected the old guys'

Tributes are pouring in for a young Lanarkshire murder victim as police hunt those responsible for his death.

Peter Kirkwood, 24, was seriously assaulted at around 1.55am on Saturday in Lanark. Emergency crews raced to the scene in Mousebank Road but he was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

A police investigation was launched and a 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. He was later released pending further enquiries.

Tributes have been paid to Peter in the wake of his passing in public, social media posts. The 'gentleman' was hailed as a 'great guy to work with' while one stressed, 'a nicer guy you couldn't meet'.

One wrote: "The big fella certainly didn't deserve to go that way. A nicer guy you couldn't meet, a gentleman."

Another posted: "He was a great guy to work with."

A third commented: "RIP you were some boy."

Another wrote: "A great young lad. I worked with him on night shift."

"He always had respect for us old guys. I feel so sorry for his family."

A fifth posted: "RIP pal, so sad for this to happen to a good guy."

While another commented: "RIP to a good guy."

Police expressed their condolences and assured locals that there is a 'continued police presence in the area'. Witnesses, those with dashcam footage or anyone with information that could help with their probe is urged to come forward.

Information can be passed on anonymously.

Detective Chief Inspector Bob Williamson said: “Our thoughts are very much with Peter’s family and friends at this difficult time. Extensive police enquiries are ongoing and we will have a continued police presence in the area.

“I would like to reassure the local community that everything is being done to trace the person responsible. I would also ask anyone who was in Mousebank Road area in the early hours of Saturday, and who may have seen or heard a disturbance, or witnessed anything suspicious, to please get in touch with us.

“Anyone with any private CCTV, dashcam or any other footage that they think would assist the enquiry is urged to pass anything notable on to us. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101 and/or use the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP), which can be accessed here.

"Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained."
