Lanarkshire politicians have praised an East Kilbride mum's efforts in securing dedicated miscarriage facilities in a county hospital.
Louise Caldwell has fought tirelessly for more than two years to put an end to women who have suffered pregnancy loss enduring the pain of delivering in a labour ward.
The 38-year-old and husband, Craig, went through this trauma in 2019 after a 12-week scan revealed the little one she was carrying didn’t have a heartbeat.
In a meeting this week with NHS Lanarkshire officials, it was confirmed that dedicated facilities are due to be in place at University Hospital Wishaw by the end of October, alongside more training for staff at Hairmyres Hospital.
The Scottish Government have also pledged to introduce measures to ensure compassionate miscarriage care is available to all by the end of 2023.
Central Scotland Labour MSP, Monica Lennon, told Lanarkshire Live : “This is a significant milestone in Louise's campaign.
"Dedicated spaces in maternity hospitals for women experiencing unexpected pregnancy complications are long overdue. It’s great NHS Lanarkshire is enthusiastically onboard.
“For those who have lost a baby, being in the labour ward with new-borns and their parents is a distressing experience.
"Louise has shone a light on how cruel this can be and has persuasively made the case for a more compassionate approach."
East Kilbride MP, Dr Lisa Cameron has, also invited Louise to Westminster in her ongoing battle to have dedicated pregnancy loss facilities across the UK.
Ms Cameron said: "I have suffered two miscarriages and am very clear this progress will make significant improvement to patient care in Scotland."
East Kilbride MSP, Collette Stevenson, added: "I’m pleased to see Wishaw General will have in place these facilities in a matter of months.
"Louise has done a power of work to raise awareness of this important issue and her campaigning will help so many people. The SNP pledged in last year’s manifesto to have dedicated facilities for women who are experiencing unexpected pregnancy complications.
"I very much welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver on that pledge and have these services in place by the end of next year.”
