A Lanarkshire charity has backed calls for elderly people to stay hydrated during the summer by drinking tap water regularly.
LEAP, based in Cambuslang, were supporting a new campaign by Scottish Water and Age Scotland.
Dehydration in older people can contribute to a number of health issues including tiredness, headaches, feeling lightheaded and confusion and experts believe that drinking between six and eight glasses of tap water a day helps keep dehydration at bay as well as supporting mental and physical health and wellbeing.
A LEAP spokesman said: "This is good advice.
"Scotland’s tap water is clean, pure and healthy and a great way to stay hydrated. And, as well as looking after yourself, you will be looking after the environment by helping reduce transport emissions and plastic waste associated with bottled water.
"We would also suggest staying indoors where possible between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest."
Last week saw Scotland swelter through the warmest days of the year so far, though temperatures did not reach the levels of parts of England and Wales, where weather warnings had to be issued due to the extreme heat.
However, both Age Scotland and Scottish Water have urged locals to look after themselves.
Michelle Supple, director of charity services at Age Scotland, said: "Now that we’re finally seeing some hot summer weather, it is vital that older people stay hydrated and healthy and there is no better way of doing that than drinking Scottish tap water.
"We are lucky in this country to be able to get clean, fresh water straight from the tap.
"There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a cool glass of tap water. It’s one of the single best things you can do to look after your health."
Older people are also being encouraged to sign up for Scottish Water’s Priority Services Register, which offers extra support for customers who have additional communication, access or safety needs.
