Lack of night time transport puts women in vulnerable positions, says Derry councillor

The lack of night time transport has been highlighted as a major issue across Northern Ireland.

Among many of the issues associated with lack of night time taxis and buses is the issue of women's safety.

Derry People Before Profit councillor Maeve O'Neill says that the lack of night transport puts women in vulnerable positions.

Maeve spoke to MyDerry about this pressing issue.

She said: "So often when people are drunk and trying to get home they can end up in pretty vulnerable situations.

"People often end up trying to flag down cars or unofficial taxis which can be dangerous.

"Even when I'm driving at night, my car does not look like a taxi but people will still try and flag me down."

Councillor O'Neill stressed that the issue of lack of night time transport is an extremely important one to tackle.

She said: "It is not just people who are on a night out that struggle to get home after their night out. Workers often find themselves in difficult positions after working late shifts too.

"Since bars and clubs have reopened we have also seen a big rise in drink spiking, which exacerbates this issue of a lack of transport.

"Imagine being in an unsafe situation and not having a guaranteed way home."

For Councillor O'Neill, there needs to be cohesive discussion with involved parties in how to solve this issue.

She said: "We do need to address this problem. In my eyes, we need to get everyone around a table including translink, taxi companies, those who have struggled to get home after nights out and workers in pubs and bars.

"There are creative ways in which this problem could be addressed and I think getting everyone together is the best way to brainstorm ideas.

"There are wider issues connected with this too. If a night bus was reinstated it of course would not take you to your door. Therefore we need to ensure things like better street lighting as well."

Councillor O'Neill commented that this problem is not unique to Derry, but it would take a local approach to come up with an effective solution.

She said: "This is not an issue that just affects Derry. When I lived and worked in Glasgow I would have often pretended to be on the phone while walking on my own at night.

"This is a global problem, but it needs a local solution.

"At the end of the day it also should not be down to women to ensure they get home safe. There also needs to be further discussion on tackling gender based violence."

In Derry City and Strabane District Council, a motion put forward by SDLP Councillor Lilian Seenoi-Barr commits to establishing an Evening Sector Taskforce which will examine issues around night time safety and availability of transport.

Since the passing of this motion, Councillor O'Neill inquired on its progress. Council now hopes to have a report on this in committee next month to agree on its next steps.
