Labour urges police action over ‘family voting’ at Gorton and Denton by-election

  • An elections observer group, Democracy Volunteers, reported "concerningly high levels" of "family voting" in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
  • The group claimed to have witnessed the illegal practice in 68 per cent of 22 monitored polling stations, affecting 12 per cent of observed voters.
  • The Electoral Commission has urged anyone with concerns about illegal voting to report them to the police.
  • Labour's chairwoman, Anna Turley, called the findings "very concerning" and hoped appropriate authorities would investigate.
  • Manchester City Council, which oversaw the by-election, criticised Democracy Volunteers for not raising alleged issues with staff during polling hours.
