The SNP have said that Labour’s New Year's resolution should be “no more U-turns".
Keir Starmer’s Labour party have made a number of policy u-turns this year, from scrapping the two-child benefit cap and abolishing tuition fees to ending Universal Credit.
SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown (below) called it “embarrassing”.
He said: “Every time Sir Keir Starmer has opened his mouth this year, another policy has been embarrassingly dumped as he slides further to the right and commits to keeping in place the policies which broke Britain.
“Not content with simply giving warm words about Margaret Thatcher - these U-turns, particularly the commitment to keep the cruel two child cap and rape clause, shows Starmer backs Thatcher’s ability to punish the most vulnerable in our society, and under Labour nothing is going to change.”
In an article for the Conservative-supporting Sunday Telegraph, Starmer said Baroness Thatcher had sought to “drag Britain out of its stupor by setting loose our natural entrepreneurialism”.
The attempt to appeal to traditional Tory voters fell flat with some Labour supporters and he was mocked by Conservative MPs as a Thatcher “fan boy” in the Commons. The SNP also slammed the comments at the time.
Brown also said that Starmer offers Scottish voters “nothing”.
He added: “Whether it’s refusing to scrap the two-child limit and rape clause, to bin the bedroom tax, to strengthen workers’ rights, to invest in Scotland’s energy future, or to enhance devolution, it’s clear that Sir Keir Starmer offers Scottish voters nothing.
“At the next election, a vote for the SNP is a vote to reject broken Brexit Britain, which neither Labour nor the Tories will fix, and a vote for independence, which will deliver the real change Scotland needs.”
