L'Équipe slaughter Ireland and France with player ratings for Euro 2024 qualifier

The Republic of Ireland came so close to securing a draw against France in a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Aviva Stadium on Monday night.

The only thing that kept Stephen Kenny's team from earning a point in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier was a miraculous save by Mike Maignan in the final seconds.

There were many players for the Boys in Green who stood out on the pitch against the two-time World Cup winners. However, famous French publication L'Équipe didn't appear to have the same view.

Several players from both sides only scored a 3/10 rating, despite the entertaining nature of the Euro 2024 qualifier.

French players Theo Hernandez, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe were given 3/10 whilst Irish pair Jason Knight and Evan Ferguson were scored likewise.

The highest scoring Irish players were John Egan, Seamus Coleman and Chiedozie Ogbene with 6/10 rewarded to them for their efforts.

Les Bleus goalscorer Benjamin Pavard was scored 7/10 whilst French shot stopper Maignan earned an 8/10 rating for his match winning save from Nathan Collins' header.

Nonetheless, the L'Équipe ratings were not a fair reflection on the Irish performance, with an average score of 4.6 for Kenny's side.
