After a string of international headliners, the AFL has finally secured a homegrown star, Kylie Minogue, to perform at the upcoming grand final in September.
The Aussie superstar confirmed her involvement in a press statement, saying she is “so excited” for the gig, which will take place immediately before the match at the MCG.
“As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar,” Minogue said, per the ABC. “I’ll not only be performing, but I’ll be one of 100,000 fans at the ‘G, watching the wonder that is footy.”
It will mark the first time an Aussie has headlined the event since 2021, when a medley of local talent including Abbe May, Baker Boy and Eskimo Joe took to the grand final stage.
In the years since, the AFL has tapped global names like Robbie Williams, Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg, the latter of whom copped backlash in the lead up to his set as his past homophobic lyrics and comments resurfaced.
In his own statement, AFL CEO Andrew Dillion said Minogue had “been on our wish list for a long time” and that hype is already building months out from the big show.
“There is no better artist to headline the performance prior to our biggest game of the season,” Dillon said. “Our AFL team recently joined Kylie at the MCG for the grand final content shoot, and you could already feel the excitement for September building.”
In a brief promotional clip shared by the AFL, Minogue appears on a massive glittery footy ball with the text, “Kylie is coming home”.
We’ll have to wait and see which tracks feature in Minogue’s grand final setlist, but with a 40-year music career, there’s truly no shortage of bangers to choose from.
