Kylian Mbappe welcomed to deafeningly loud boos from Argentina fans at World Cup final

Kylian Mbappe was loudly booed by Argentina fans ahead of kick-off in the World Cup final in Qatar.

The France superstar was the main goal threat for his nation going into Sunday’s crunch final against the South American giants, who are hoping to win their first World Cup title since 1986. Mbappe was hoping to lead Les Bleus to become the first nation to retain the trophy since Brazil in 1962.

Mbappe scored two stunning goals as France eased into the World Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Poland on Sunday. It continued a superb tournament for the striker, who scored five goals in his three starts – having been rested in the group stage clash against Tunisia.

The PSG superstar had already netted twice to fire France to a deserved 2-1 victory over Denmark in the group stage of the tournament, having previously found the back of the net in France's opening-game 4-1 victory over Australia. However, he did not score in either the quarter-final or semi-final victories for Les Bleus.

However, Mbappe’s five goals in this tournament meant that he had already passed his 2018 tally of four goals – when he was the star as Didier Deschamps’s side won the title in Russia and lifted their first World Cup trophy since 1998, when Deschamps was captain.

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Mbappe is now aiming to incredibly lift his second World Cup title by the age of 23, which would elevate him to a status and achievement that had only previously been achieved by Brazilian football icon Pele. However, the star received deafening whistles from Argentina fans ahead of kick-off in the final in Lusail – with France fans heavily outnumbered in the stadium.

At club level, Mbappe signed a new three-year contract at the Parc des Princes earlier this year after prolonged links with a move to Real Madrid. Recent reports have claimed that he wants to leave PSG in January, as his future was once again thrust into the limelight in October.

Mbappe's eye-watering contract details were leaked as the Ligue 1 champions posted recorded losses of £317million for their most recent set of accounts. It is the latest problem for the striker in the French capital and comes amid his ongoing reported feud with attacking teammate Neymar.

Mbappe initially refused to commit his future to PSG following suggestions of an exit. "For now, a second World Cup. After that, I don't know," the France international said ahead of the tournament when quizzed on his alleged transfer request.
