Ky. Transportation Secretary says fast-charger placement to start soon

Work in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet goes beyond the laying down of new pavement across the Commonwealth. Preparation for an expected increase in electric vehicles is also a part of the transportation department’s agenda.

A primary focus in state transportation currently is the establishment of fast chargers along Kentucky's interstates and parkways. Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said contracts have been let for some of the up to 37 stations. While attending this month’s inauguration festivities, Gray said construction is anticipated to begin in the coming weeks.

“By the end of next year we’re looking to see a majority of those projects completed and ready for charging,” said Gray.

Road maintenance and new construction are also key facets of the Transportation Cabinet. Gray said about 15 hundred of these projects are underway at any given time.

The Transportation secretary said the 12 district offices include some 44 hundred employees. Also during the inauguration, Gray said these workers also play a key role in times of natural disaster.

“Our folks are actually the first of the first responders because you’ve got to clear the roads before even our first responders can often get in to access victims,” said Gray.

In addition to many maintenance and total rehabilitation road projects, Gray noted there are mega-projects. He added the Brent Spence Bridge, Interstate 69, and Mountain Parkway projects are either under design, under construction, or under contract.
