Kuwait airport hit by Iranian drone strike; fuel tanks on fire

Iran on Wednesday launched drone strikes targeting Kuwait International Airport, hitting fuel storage tanks and triggering a “large fire”, AFP reported citing Gulf state’s civil aviation authority.

“Kuwait International Airport has been subjected to blatant attacks by drones launched by Iran and the armed factions it supports,” Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) quoted General Directorate of Civil Aviation spokesperson Abdullah Al-Rajhi as saying.

He added that “fuel storage tanks... were targeted, resulting in a large fire at the site”, confirming there were no casualties.

The strike comes amid a wider escalation in the Gulf following the conflict that began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes against Iran, after which Tehran launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and US allies across the Gulf. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had said that Gulf countries were “100% on the US side” and were “fighting back very well”

Bahrain also reported a fire at a business facility on Wednesday “as a result of the Iranian aggression”, while Saudi Arabia's defence ministry said several drones were intercepted and destroyed.

In Qatar, a tanker was hit north of Doha, with the UK Maritime Trade Operations saying the crew were safe and there was “no environmental impact”.

On Tuesday, KUNA had said an Iranian attack caused a fire on a Kuwaiti oil tanker at Dubai Port, with no injuries.
