Kris Commons believes Celtic captain Callum McGregor is following a path to immortality that mirrors Liverpool's Jordan Henderson.
The former Parkhead star insists McGregor was never going to be "the new Scott Brown" but does see parallels with his Anfield equivalent.
Commons advocated early for the midfielder to take the armband from Brown despite his reputation as a quieter character than his legendary predecessor.
But the pundit is adamant football has evolved beyond the need for a blood and thunder skipper.
He says McGregor is more akin to Henderson, whose credentials were seriously questioned when he succeeded Steven Gerrard on Merseyside.
The England international has since led Liverpool to six major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League, to take his place in club history.
And Commons is confident McGregor is charting a similar course to become one of Celtic's greatest ever captains.
He wrote in his Daily Mail column: "McGregor was never going to be 'The New Scott Brown'. He's a quiet man who perfectly encapsulates how the role of a captain has changed.
"Football has evolved massively over the past ten years.
"The days of Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira squaring up to each other in the Highbury tunnel are long gone.
"Look at Jordan Henderson at Liverpool. A lot of people doubted him when he took over the armband from Steven Gerrard a few years ago.
"Now a Premier League and Champions League winner, he's proven himself to be one of the best captains in Liverpool's history.
"That's the same trajectory I believe McGregor is now on at Celtic.
"Not that he would ever admit it. He's a shy and humble guy off the pitch."
