Kris Boyd disagrees with Michael Beale's assertion that Rangers don't have to worry about the goalkeeping situation and insists it should have been addressed LAST summer.
Allan Mcgregor dropped out with the flu for the Friday night festive trip to Dingwall, which was won by a John Lundstram Christmas cracker in the first half. The veteran came in for some criticism for the way he was beaten y Duk's free-kick to draw Aberdeen level during Tuesday dramatic 3-2 victory for the Gers at Pittodrie.
But remained in his sick bed as the Light Blues headed to the Highlands with Jon McLaughlin deputising. He produced a clean sheet in a routine if somewhat turgid win, but Boyd believes there's a problem brewing that has to be fixed ahead of next season, seeing as it was allowed to develop last summer. McGregor looks odds on to retire after his last dance and with McLaughlin in his mid-30s, Boyd has concerns over who will be between the sticks long term.
Robby McCrory is untested and inexperienced, with little first team football under his belt. Boyd knows his close pal McGregor is approaching the time when he'll have to hang the gloves up but doesn't see a clear succession plan in place.
"I look at the goalkeeping situation at Rangers. Allan McGregor plays and all the fans seem to want Jon McLaughlin in. he plays and then everyone says Allan McGregor should be playing," he told Sky Sports.
"There's no getting away from it, Allan has been a fantastic goalkeeper but he's now approaching 41. Jon Mclaughlin is 35 as well and you've got Robby McCrorie there, who is getting to the stage now where he needs to be playing football. I know Michael Beale has said that it's not an area that he needs to worry about at this moment in time. But I have to disagree. Allan can't go on forever. Jon is 35. Can you say you're going to build for the future?
"Let's be honest, Michael Beale is going to be here for a long time, It's not a disservice to Jon McLaughlin, he's a good goalkeeper, but is he going to be the Rangers No 1 going forward? It's an area Rangers have to address in the summer. People look at it from the point of view that there are other areas you need to strengthen, but stats tell you that you're No9 is the most important area of the pitch. Next, it's the goalkeeper.
"It's an area you can't write off and it needs to be addressed going forward. You look at the situation in the summer with the recruitment, it's something that should have been done there as well. Whether Allan was meant to sign his contract or not, I don't know. But you would have thought there would have been someone else to come in if that was the case, but the club decided not to do it."
