The Arts Council Korea, the Thai Korean War Veterans Association, and the Korean Cultural Center in Thailand will present the Bangkok premiere of The Wedding Day, a Korean opera, at Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on June 7 and 8 at 6.30pm.
Staged by the New Seoul Opera Company, the opera is about a traditional Korean wedding that features Korean culture portrayed through traditional music, dance and outfits. It premiered in 2012 in eight cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai and Xian, as well as Russia.
Presented in the form of Western-style opera, the show will feature a cast of 100 performers including top opera singers of the New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, choir singers and dancers.
The story is about Maeng Jin-sa or Maeng, a greedy man who promises to marry his daughter to Mi-eon, the son of a tycoon family, for his own interest.
However, Mi-eon falls in love with the bride-to-be's servant. To avoid marriage, he creates a rumour that the tycoon's son is severely disabled.
Maeng then comes up with a scheme by dressing up his daughter's servant in the bridal costume and sending her to the wedding instead. What happens then will be discovered in the show.
