Kolkata: Substitute for plastic bags needed, says Salt Lake residents

KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to kick off its drive to ban the use of plastic carry bags measuring below 75 microns across the market places of Salt Lake and Rajarhat from May 1 as residents and environmentalists are stressing on the need to properly enforce the prohibition and to come up with alternatives to replace the use of plastic bags.

It was noticed during last monsoon that sewerage and drainage lines across Salt Lake and Rajarhat were chocked with plastic waste, leading to widespread waterlogging.
