KOLKATA: A 28-year-old veterinary compounder died late on Monday night — almost 24 hours after he fell from the terrace of his friend’s house, a two-storey building — at Senhati in Behala on Sunday around 11 pm. The victim — Kushal Chakraborty, a resident of Pashupati Bhattacharjee Road in Behala’s Chanditala — was rushed to Vidyasagar Hospital by his friend’s family and later shifted to NRS Hospital, where he died at 11.55pm on Monday.
The Behala police has arrested Kushal’s friend — Debanjan Sen alias Bitan (29) — after the victim’s brother Kunal lodged an FIR and claimed the duo had a severe argument after consuming liquor. Cops have charged Debanjan under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). “If the post-mortem indicates that the victim was pushed from the terrace, we will review the IPC sections and slap murder charges,” said an investigating officer.
“Kunal alleged that his elder brother was consuming alcohol with his friend Debanjan on the rooftop room of the latter’s house when they got involved in an altercation and later a scuffle broke out, during which Kushal fell from the rooftop and got injured,” said DC (South West) Swati Bhangalia.
Investigators claimed that neither the reason behind the death nor the issue of the argument was still clear.
“So far, we are keeping all possibilities — murder and accidental death — open. The reason behind the argument seems petty till now. We are still unsure of the actual chain of events and awaiting post-mortem reports and statements from the accused’s family to ascertain the truth,” said an investigating officer.
